Schools bank extra credit with PeopleForBikes and Let's Move! Active Schools Awards
Congratulations to the schools who banked a little extra credit heading into the summer with the PeopleForBikes and Let’s Move! Active Schools awards.
PeopleForBikes awards go to the three schools with the highest percentage of participants tracking biking activity during the Challenge period. The three winning schools are:
Manitou Springs Middle School in Manitou Springs, CO
Ka’elepulu Elementary School in Honolulu, HI
Maryland Ave Montessori School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Special thanks to the PeopleForBikes for making these awards possible. Through their generous support of Fire Up Your Feet, schools like Ka’elepulu Elementary School are getting more active each year. “We held a Bike to School Day during the Challenge and had four times the usual number of kids, parents and siblings riding and walking to school. It was great to see some of the kids that live far away and the very young kids get dropped off a block or so away in order to ride up to school and participate,” said Lisa Peddle, a parent at Ka’elepulu Elementary School.
Let’s Move Active Schools
In each participating Fire Up Your Feet region, we were proud to team up with Let’s Move! Active Schools to recognize schools participating in both initiatives. These winning schools were selected from a drawing of eligible schools and awarded $500 to support their efforts to ensure that 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the new norm for students:
Canfield Elementary School in Los Angeles, CA
Lafayette Elementary School in Eureka, CA
Fremont Middle School in Fremont, CO
Burgess-Peterson Academy in Atlanta, GA
Elk Meadow Elementary School in Bend, OR
Monticello Middle School in Longview, WA
Kualapuu Elementary School in Kualapuu, HI
KIPP DC-Heights Academy in Washington, DC
Riverside Elementary School in Alexandria, VA
Stoneleigh Elementary School in Baltimore, MD
West Salem Elementary School in West Salem, WI
Andover Elementary Middle School in Andover, NH
R Guild Gray Elementary School in Las Vegas, NV
We look forward to staying in touch over the summer. Don’t forget to save the date for the 2015 Fall Activity Challenge, which takes place October 1-31, 2015.
